Colors in Thai: Complete Vocabulary + The Day-Color System
Learn all the colors in Thai — including the fascinating Thai day-color system and the cultural significance of colors like yellow and black in Thai society.
Learning colors is one of the more relaxed steps in Thai vocabulary — but in Thailand, colors carry an extra layer of meaning. They're connected to days of the week, astrology, and social symbolism. Once you know which color belongs to which day, you understand why Thais sometimes dress very deliberately.
Basic Colors in Thai
In Thai, colors are always preceded by สี (sǐi, rising tone) — the word for "color." So "red" isn't just แดง (dɛɛng), it's สีแดง (sǐi dɛɛng). In conversation, สี is sometimes dropped when context is clear.
Thailand's Day-Color System
In Thai culture, each day of the week has its own lucky color, derived from the astrological planet that 'rules' that day. Thais sometimes wear the color of the day consciously — it's considered auspicious:
Monday (วันจันทร์): yellow (สีเหลือง) — color of the moon.
Tuesday (วันอังคาร): pink (สีชมพู) — linked to Mars in Thai astrological tradition.
Wednesday (วันพุธ): green (สีเขียว) — color of Mercury.
Thursday (วันพฤหัสบดี): orange (สีส้ม) — linked to Jupiter and associated with monks.
Friday (วันศุกร์): light blue (สีฟ้า) — color of Venus.
Saturday (วันเสาร์): purple (สีม่วง) — linked to Saturn.
Sunday (วันอาทิตย์): red (สีแดง) — color of the sun.
Yellow holds special status in Thailand: it's the color of the royal family and Buddhism. On Mondays — the birth day of King Rama IX (Bhumibol Adulyadej) — many Thais wear yellow as a tribute to his memory. Black is the color of mourning — avoid it at Thai birthdays and festive occasions.
