Our story

Built by someone who's actually moving to Thailand.

Pasaa is not a startup experiment. It's a personal project — built because I'm moving to Thailand myself and couldn't find a tool that truly prepares you for what Thai really is.

✈️

Why Thailand?

I'm moving to Thailand. Not for a holiday, not for a while — permanently. And as a developer I knew exactly what that meant: learning Thai, really learning it. Not a few pleasantries, but being able to talk fluently with local people, make friends, live in the language.

I tried everything. Duolingo (too superficial for Thai), Pimsleur (no script, too expensive), YouTube (unstructured), apps that only teach romanisation without ever showing the real script. Nothing worked the way I knew it could. So I built it myself.

🛠️

How Pasaa was built

As a software developer I could handle the technical side — SvelteKit, Supabase, Web Audio API, tone analysis algorithms. But Thai is not something you decipher from behind a laptop alone. Language is culture, context and nuance.

For that I worked together with linguists who reviewed the Thai curriculum for pedagogical structure — from the order of consonant classes to the introduction of tone sandhi. And with Thai friends who checked every sentence for authenticity: the right registers, the real expressions, the nuances no book teaches you.

Every native audio recording, every register badge, every word choice in the curriculum has been approved by people who speak Thai as their mother tongue or study it as a science. No translation machine. No generic content. Real language.

🧠

The philosophy behind Pasaa

Thai has five tones. Thai has its own script of 44 consonants and 32 vowel forms. Thai has a complex register system where formal and informal language differ so much that a wrong sentence in the wrong situation can make you seem blunt or even rude.

Most apps treat Thai like French. They swap out words, give you some phrases, and call that learning. Pasaa assumes you really want to be able to communicate — in Thai script, with the right tones, in the right situation.

Hence the scientific FSRS algorithm for repetition. Hence live tone analysis via your microphone. Hence register badges on every sentence. Hence Thai script next to every romanisation — always, from lesson 1. These are not features. They are the minimum requirement to learn Thai seriously.

🙏

ขอบคุณ — acknowledgements

Pasaa exists thanks to everyone who put time into reviewing, correcting and improving the curriculum. To the Thai friends who checked sentences in the middle of the night: ขอบคุณมากครับ (khòob-khun mâak khrâp) — heartfelt thanks.

To the linguists who shared their expertise: your fingerprint is in every lesson. And to everyone who gave feedback as an early user — you made it better than I could ever have built it alone.
